The Key to Life

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight."

It's all God

"Dear friends,
you always followed my instructions when I was with you.
And now that I am away,
it is even more important.
Word hard to show the results of your salvation,
obeying God with deep reverence and fear.
For God is working in you,
giving you the desire
and the power
to do what pleases him."
Philippians 2:12-13 NLT

The sound of birds singing praises to their Maker woke me early that Spring morning.  I arose, stepping foot into the awakening garden, feeling the softness of new blades of grass beneath my feet,  observing the buds opening here, the bright, cheery blossoms there.  As I examined the ground, it seemed to be coming to life with new growth: Blooms of the crocus trumpeted the end of Winter, Azaleas bursting forth with the hope of soon-to-come blankets of color, and even the weeds rising up from the seemingly dead earth show forth the hand of God.  There is no greater time than Spring to see that everything can be attributed to God.

When I look beyond nature and into my heart, I discover that even my desire to please God comes from Him.  I have it not in me to want to do the right thing, no matter what I think.  My sinful nature pushes me away from Him, but His loving Spirit constantly draws me.  As I notice how He works within me, it is evident that He gets all the glory for the great things He has done in my heart, life and in the world at large.

Moves my Heart

Much was needed for the sacred garments of the Levites, the performance of required rituals, and for the building of the Tabernacle itself.  The nation of Israel had received the law from God through their leader Moses.  Now they knew what was expected of them from a holy God, and they also realized the task that lay before them in undertaking this large project.  The first step after hearing the plan from God was to collect the necessary materials.  Moses must have thought of the enormity of this venture and wondered how it would all come together.

Then God did His work on the hearts of the people.  Exodus 35:20-24 describes how He stirred the hearts and moved the spirits of the people, prompting them to bring not only offerings to the Lord, but also all the materials needed for the Tabernacle.  It said, "Both men and women came, all whose hearts were willing" came to offer everything from richly colored thread to acacia wood. (Exodus 35:22a NLT)  There was no need for Moses to worry; God moved the hearts of the people to do that which pleased Him.

In the same way, God moves my heart to value Him above all things.  Instead of doing things that I think I should do, He gives me the desire to know Him more.  Oswald Chambers wrote about how easy it is to work toward the wrong goal.  He said when I focus on Christian work instead of on Christ, I'm evading my true purpose in maintaining my friendship and loyalty to Him.   "Instead of being friends of the Bridegroom, we may become amateur providences, and may work against Him whilst we use His weapons."

God moves my heart to desire a relationship with Jesus above everything else.

Changes my Will

She used to only care about herself and her needs; especially the emotional ones.  Consequently, she jumped from one man to another, seeking what could not be found in any mortal.  All that was left of her life was a skeleton of what she had once dreamed it could be.  How did she end up here, ostracized and the town's laughing stock, forced to visit the well in the heat of the day for fear of humiliation at the hand of the backbiting women who gathered there in the cool of the morning? (John 4:1-42)  The Samaritan woman had hit bottom.

Then she met Jesus.  As she heard and accepted the message of the Living Water that would forever quench that deep-seated need inside of her, the transformation began.  Instead of thinking about herself, she thought of all the townspeople who needed to know this Messiah as much as she did.  God had changed her will from wanting only to look out for herself to desiring to make Him famous.

In the same way, He changes my will so that I desire Him to be able to get His way.  Instead of seeing people who are living messed up lives, I perceive an opportunity to introduce those who are lost in darkness to the One who will make all things right.

God changes my will from only being concerned with my own happiness to desiring to make Jesus known to those around me.

Driven to Love

His heart was black with hate.  If it is the last thing I do, I will wipe these wretched people off the face of the earth.  He thought it the highest calling to beat, arrest and even kill the followers of Christ. (Acts 9:1-19)  Saul saw himself as a true follower of God and the Christians as his enemy.

Soon, however, Jesus set Him straight by confronting Saul on the road to Damascus as he was on his way to arrest many believers.  Saul, who then became Paul, saw the truth of his actions and became one of those he used to persecute.  Instead of being obsessed with going after believers, he became driven to love all people in the name of Jesus.

The God of love who snatched me from the jaws of death as surely as He did Paul, has given me a deep well of compassion that springs up inside of me.  Suddenly, things I used to never think of doing, like reaching out to a drunk, showing kindness to a stripper or giving up something valuable for one who is in need becomes second nature.

God makes me driven to love those around me who live in a world devoid of compassion.

Everything comes from God and there is nothing for which I can take credit.  He moves my heart to align more with His, changes my will to desire what He desires and drives me to love like He does.  Everything good in my life is from Him and I can take no credit for any of it.  Because of this, I can point to all the good in my life and say with conviction, "It's all God!"

As I begin this day it is my prayer that I can remember to keep God front and center.

How do I naturally shy away from those who look different from me and fail to let God love through me?

When do I most notice the way He has transformed me?

Today is the Day

"As God's partners,
we beg you not to accept this marvelous gift
of God's kindness and then ignore it.
For God says,
'At just the right time, I heard you.
On the day of salvation, I helped you.'
Indeed, the 'right time' is now.
Today is the day of salvation."
2 Corinthians 6:1-2 NLT

"Why do today what I can do tomorrow?"  This is the motto of the procrastinator.  While it may not bring much harm to put some things off, it is not the same with God.  He is calling me, why wait?  I choose this day to not let the grace God extends be for naught;  I'd rather make it count!

Be Reconciled to God

Her life was a series of failures: Failed marriages.  Failed relationships.  Failed religious pursuits.  She was an outcast, shunned for her choice of lifestyle.  No one thought about her or cared to know her.  No one, that is, except the man who seemed to know the intimate details of her life but loved her enough to offer her living water that would eternally quench her thirst.  After this encounter with the Messiah, her life would never again be the same. (John 4)

Jesus stands at the door of my heart, waiting for me to invite Him into my life. (Revelation 3:20)  On my own, I have no rights to God because my sin has set me up as His enemy. (Colossians 1:21)  But the moment I let Jesus in, allowing His redemptive work accomplished on the cross to cover my sins, I am reconciled to a Holy God who loves me.

Jesus already did all the work, what am I waiting for?

Today is the day to be reconciled to God through faith in Jesus Christ and to begin to live for Him.

Answer the Call

Times were bad.  The nation of Israel was divided into two kingdoms, both peoples following their own ways.   God wanted someone to deliver a message of repentance and salvation to the wayward people.  Who would go?  He put out the call: "Whom shall I send as a messenger to the people?"  Anyone could answer.  Who would be the one to step forward?

It turns out that Isaiah was the man who responded to this call of God.  (Isaiah 6:8)  As a result, Isaiah became one of the most prolific as well as oft-quoted prophets.

What is God bringing to my attention that could be a part of my life's purpose?  Am I bothered by the homeless problem in my own community, or the horrific holocaust we call abortion or the lack of respect for marriage in this country?  Perhaps I could take the initiative and answer the call to love others and take a stand for righteousness.

It's not always easy to step out in faith, especially when I'm going out on a limb.  But as Oswald Chambers said, "Then comes the call to spiritual tenacity, not to hang on and do nothing, but to work deliberately on the certainty that God is not going to be worsted."

God put out the call, so what am I waiting for?

Today is the day to step forward in faith and begin to live for Him, believing with all certainty that the dream He placed on my heart will come to pass.

Tell Others

They were confused and helpless.  The people reminded him of sheep without a shepherd, floundering around in the mundane details of their lives, searching for some kind of meaning and purpose.  He spread the Good News and healed the sick, but more kept coming.  There must be more workers! (Matthew 9:35-38)

The heart of Jesus went out to His people.  They needed Him and the message He delivered, but as God stuck in a mortal body, He saw the need for back-up.

When was the last time I told someone about Jesus?  Or brought the Words of life that would bring healing to the hurting?  Or spoke the Truth in the midst of deception?

God prepared the harvest, so what am I waiting for?

Today is the day to speak the Truth in love for all to benefit.

It is easy to put off the action for which I know I am destined.  Instead of waiting, it is my intention to make today the day I will be reconciled to God, answer His call, and tell others what they so desperately need to hear.  Today is the day of salvation!

As I begin this day it is my prayer that I won't wait another day to begin living for Christ.

When do I hear God calling but fail to step forward in faith?

How am I afraid to speak the truth?

Open the Door

Here I am!
I stand at the door and knock.
If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.
Revelation 3:20

"Ding, Dong!"
"Oh, no!  They're here already. . .why are they early?  We're not ready yet!  Quick, everyone, finish tidying up and I'll stall them at the door.  Somebody put the dogs in the room.  Oh, and don't forget to check the bathroom!  Go!"

Has this ever happened to you?  You're running late in preparing for dinner guests and then they show up before the appointed time!  This is kind of how I can feel about Jesus.  He is waiting at the door for me to invite Him into my life, but I am busy scurrying around trying to make myself presentable before I let Him in.  But the key to being a good hostess is not in impressing my guests with a clean home and wonderful cooking, but in welcoming them into my life as it is and helping them to feel as part of the family.  The focus is on the guest, not on the hostess.   How can I let Jesus in now, and not wait until it may be too late?

Be Thankful  The Westminister Shorter Catechism states that the chief end of man is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.  Paul instructs in I Corinthians 10:31 to take part in life with a spirit of thankfulness in all things.  "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God."  As I go through the mundane parts of my life, if I make Jesus my focus and my reason for doing all that I do, my attitude will change from one of fear and restlessness, to one of satisfaction and contentment.  I am here for God, He is not here for me!

Be Accepting  Jesus does not expect me to make myself presentable before I allow Him into my life.  He know me well, as He demonstrated when He met the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4).  He knew every detail of her life, but He loved her anyway! It is the same with me and you.   In fact, ". . . God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8)  Jesus did not wait until I was halfway there before He sacrificially gave His life to make me presentable before a Holy God.  No!  He did all the redemptive work for me, all I do is accept.  He knows my sin better than I do, but He loves me just as I am.  All that's left for me to do is let Him love me!

Be Purposeful  Today is the day to let Jesus into my life, to live alongside of me.  None of us are guaranteed tomorrow!  God's Word found in James 4:14 reminds us that, ". . . you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes."  Since we don't know how long we have here, we should make the most of every opportunity. (Ephesians 5:15-16)
Perhaps Benjamin Glover and Jeffrey Thomas Pardo said it best in the song they penned for Mandisa called, "Waiting for Tomorrow*."

Maybe tomorrow we'll start over
Maybe tomorrow I will finally change my ways
Said the same things yesterday
Don't know why I'm so afraid
To let you in
To let you win
To let you have all of me

Can't spend my
whole life wastin'
Everything I know I've been given
'Cause you've made for so much more than
Sittin' on the side lines
I don't wanna look back and wonder
If good enough could've been better

Everyday's a day to start over
So, why am I waiting for tomorrow

Maybe today I'll start believing
That you're mercy is really
As real as you say it is
It doesn't matter who I used to be
It only matters that I've been set free
You rescued me you're changing me
Jesus take everything

Oh, I'm makin this my moment now
To grab the hand that's reachin down to save me You saved me
And I'm makin this my moment now
To grab the hand that's reachin down to save me You saved me

I'm gonna grab the hand that's reachin down
And I'm not gonna wait until tomorrow
Oh, tomorrow

Do I have caution tape around the door of my heart?  You and I cannot afford to wait any longer to let Jesus into our lives.  What are we waiting for?

As I begin this day, it is my prayer that I will let Jesus into every part of my life and not attempt to hide anything from Him.

What am I trying to make presentable before showing it to Jesus?

How am I withholding parts of my life out of fear of what Jesus will think, forgetting that He loves me as I am?
